Chevrolet Corvette 2nd generation • 1963–1967

The first generation Chevrolet Corvette lasted 10 years on the market, after which it was replaced by an equally spectacular second generation, called the C2 Sting Ray. From English, this word is translated as a slope, and it is it that perfectly characterizes the shape of the novelty with a flat silhouette and predatory body lines.

The two most recognizable features of this car were the pronounced elevation above the wheel arches and retractable headlights. The internal content fully corresponded to the external swiftness – thanks to the high-torque motors for this. The weakest of the palette of available engines was a V8 with a capacity of 250 “horses”, but gradually it was replaced by more and more powerful brothers up to the 6.5-liter and 7-liter giants, producing 425 and 435 hp. With. respectively.

It is curious that with such parameters, the C2 Sting Ray was also smaller and lighter than its predecessor. The dynamic characteristics were impressive – the 435-horsepower “corvette” exchanged the first “hundred” in less than 5 seconds, and the weaker versions also gave heat. The power from the engine to the wheels was transmitted by one of three transmissions – a dual-range “automatic” or a three- or four-speed “handle”. In order to curb such agility, good brakes and suspension were needed, so the engineers installed disc brakes on all wheels and an independent “double-lever” on transverse springs for the rear axle.

Over the five years of production, about 118,000 Stingrays were produced. Particularly noteworthy is the Grand Sport version with a 6.2-liter V8 with a capacity of 550 “horses”. Only five such machines were created, so their collection value is very high.

Chevrolet Corvette • 3rd generation • 1968–1982

In 1968, the world first saw perhaps the most popular and massive “corvette”. His appearance was a very successful continuation of the concept of the second generation, and he also retained the name Stingray, however, now this word was written together.

The design came out truly amazing, and technologically the car was again on top. At first, the new “stingray” moved using the same engines as its predecessor, but gradually the range of engines was updated. In 1969, a 5.7-liter 300-horsepower unit became available, a year later – an impressive seven-liter mechanism with a power of 390 “horses”. There was also a racing modification ZR1, under the hood of which as many as 430 stallions fit in an all-aluminum power unit.

Since 1972, the standards for measuring car power have changed in the United States, and according to the new rules, the numbers turned out to be much smaller, but more realistic than before – for example, a Corvette with the heftiest 7.4-liter engine instead of 425 hp. With. now, as it were, he had only 270. Then the oil crisis began to make itself felt – taxes on fuel increased, and because of this, large power units were no longer in demand as before. The main long-livers were the 5.7-liter V8, which, in accordance with the new standards, developed about 200 forces.

Some were also saddened by the fact that since 1975 the production of convertibles has ceased (not forever, but more on that later). And in 1978, the Corvette celebrated its birthday, and Chevrolet on this occasion released a special version of the 25th anniversary, painted in silver. Over 15 years, more than 540,000 third-generation Chevrolet Corvette have been assembled.
