Alfa Romeo Giulietta: Common Problems and Solutions
Alfa Romeo Giulietta has a very interesting set of powertrains. It does not matter, it is desirable that you just ride around the city and at the same time do not spend on fuel, or press the gas pedal to the floor on a winding serpentine.
Everyone will be able to find a suitable motor. In terms of dynamics, the most smooth and economical is the base 105 hp diesel engine, which accelerates the Italian car to 100 km/h in 11.3 seconds. The rest of the motors have good and very good dynamics. The top 235-horsepower version accelerates to hundreds of 6.8 seconds.
Unfortunately, not all powertrains are worthy of recommendations. The 1.4-liter TB MultiAir engine delivers the most problems in operation. Its weak point is the hydraulic valve actuation without the help of a traditional camshaft. Due to a malfunction of the hydraulic drive, the valve timing shifted, and as a result, the power dropped, and “triple” appeared. Many cars have been “cured” under warranty. However, there are cases when MultiAir ran more than 350,000 km without any protests. It must be remembered that the MultiAir activator has its own oil filter, which must be cleaned regularly.
At 1.75 TBi, there are injector failures and premature pump wear.
On the positive side, it is worth noting diesel engines. The only problem is a quickly clogged particulate filter. First of all, this applies to cars operated in the city.
Design features
Regardless of the modification, Giulietta has front-wheel drive only. Torque is transmitted through a 6-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed TCT dual-clutch automatic. The front suspension received MacPherson struts, and the independent rear suspension received an aluminum wishbone system. In EuroNCAP crash tests, an excellent result was achieved – 5 stars.
The TST robotic box was installed in a pair of 1.4 170 hp. and 2.0 Multijet 170 HP Switching happens instantly. At the moment, there are no serious problems with the robot.
Another common drawback is the knock of the steering rack. Trouble may appear after several tens of thousands of kilometers. Giulietta owners also complain about problems with the power steering. On the first copies, the levers were knocked out pretty quickly. Fortunately, the manufacturer later addressed the problem. Despite this, it is better to carefully inspect the suspension before buying.
During the inspection, you should also pay attention to oil leaks from the engine. If detected, it will be necessary to replace the camshaft or crankshaft oil seals. If this is not done quickly enough for the second element, then leaks can cause oil to enter the clutch. Then the repair costs can be very high.
What else can go wrong? Unfortunately a lot. However, in most cases, these are minor things. For example, the brake calipers paint is coming off pretty quickly. Or because the gas tank cap stops closing due to damage to the plastic latch. And after 3-4 years of operation, the leather upholstery of the door panels bursts. Pretty indecent, given the young age of the car, which also aspires to the premium class. Plastic can make noise in the cabin, and the suspension can creak in cold weather. Sometimes the Blue&Me hands-free system and the audio system fail (does not turn on).
Sometimes the air conditioner fails. As a rule, it’s all about a burned-out air conditioning fan motor. From time to time, the LEDs in the rear lights go out or the rear wiper fails. The reason is damage to the harnesses and contacts. After prolonged downpours, water may appear in the direction indicators, brake lights and trunk. Not reliable and heated side mirrors.
